Space Engineers 2 adds combat NPC AI that adapts to destructible worlds
By GameSlash
The October 19 Hostile Encounters update adds combat NPCs that navigate player-built structures, relocate after cover is destroyed and share threats, alongside new blocks and experimental DLSS.

On October 19, 2026, Keen Software House released Hostile Encounters for the playable alpha of Space Engineers 2. The major update introduces combat NPCs to its fully destructible space-engineering sandbox for the first time. The headline is not generative dialogue: it is enemy navigation and combat behaviour that must adapt as players reshape the terrain, buildings and vehicles around them.
Enemy AI in a world players can rebuild or destroy
In conventional shooters, enemy routes and cover are often designed around relatively stable levels. Space Engineers 2 presents a harder problem: players can mine voxel terrain, build new walls, remove doors, move vehicles and destroy the cover a character was using. The developer says its new NPCs can traverse grids and player-made interiors, avoid moving obstacles and change position when their cover disappears.
Enemies can patrol, search for threats, fire at a player's last known location, detect player-built vehicles, alert nearby allies and react differently when injured. These are described as gameplay AI and navigation systems; the announcement does not describe them as language-model-driven or generative NPCs.
Renegades and Boatmen arrive on Verdure
Two hostile variants debut: Renegades, described as outlaws and pirates, and the heavier Boatmen leaders. The first encounters are limited to planet Verdure, and those enemies do not yet use jetpacks. Combat has also gained directional damage indicators, accuracy changes while moving or crouching, rifle recoil and more differentiated damage to structures.
Exploration, building blocks and experimental DLSS

Beyond combat, the update revises Locations, Contracts, resource visuals, flora and planetary lighting. Keen also lists 19 new building blocks, including Interior Turrets, cables, pipes, armor slabs and interior props. Experimental NVIDIA DLSS support is included, using DLSS 4.5 according to the studio; it explicitly says DLSS Frame Generation is not part of the implementation.
What players should know
Space Engineers 2 remains an Early Access alpha rather than a completed game. Some updated tutorials, Locations and Contracts may require a new save to appear. Four-player co-op is a separate milestone currently planned for early 2027, not part of Hostile Encounters. The features above are based on the developer's release notes, not independent hands-on testing.
