itch.io expands No AI search filter as it tackles mass-generated game uploads

By GameSlash

itch.io added generative-AI disclosure filtering to game search on November 3, 2026 and reported removing large volumes of AI spam. Here's what changes for indie creators.

On November 3, 2026, indie game marketplace itch.io announced an expansion of its generative-AI disclosure filters to its search results. Players can use the “No AI” filter to find projects whose creators explicitly indicate they have not used generative AI. For indie developers, this changes how AI-assisted projects can be discovered and why accurate disclosures matter.

What changed

Itch.io said the generative-AI disclosure controls were being introduced in places where they were previously missing, including the search page. The filter is based on information supplied by uploaders; it should not be treated as proof that every unlabelled project is AI-free. The update is a discovery and transparency measure, not a blanket ban on developers using AI.

On November 2 UTC, the platform also said it had deleted “a couple terabytes” of low-quality AI-generated uploads. This was described in the context of enforcing spam and quality rules; itch.io did not provide a verified count of affected games or say that every AI-assisted project had been removed.

Why this matters for AI game creators

Creators who use AI for code, imagery, sound or writing should describe that use accurately on their project pages, rather than assuming that a successful upload guarantees visibility. A category-based AI label can influence which players see a game when they search.

The announcement follows an earlier itch.io chart, posted November 1 UTC, showing that new game pages created per day roughly doubled over two months. That chart shows page creation, not a verified count of AI-generated games, and it should not be read as evidence that AI caused the entire increase.
