AI made a 3D character but it stands still? Start from animated character assets

By GameSlash

Give an AI coding agent animated 3D models first, then connect idle and movement states. Compare two CC0 Kenney character packs and test the controls.

A coding agent can put a detailed 3D character into your game scene and still leave it sliding across the floor like a statue. The missing piece is often an actual animation workflow: selecting an idle or walking clip and linking it to player movement.

Kenney lists Animated Characters Protagonists as a CC0 3D animated-character pack with eight files. Animated Characters Retro is a separate eight-file CC0 set. Use these as starting assets rather than treating an AI-generated still image as a rigged playable character.

First ask the AI to show one real animation

Download the pack and import an appropriate model into the game engine. Inspect which animation clips actually arrived. Ask your assistant to make the character stand in one place and play one available animation. Do not assume a named clip exists without inspecting the file.

Next add movement: when the player is idle, use the idle pose or clip supported by the model; when moving, use a suitable available motion. If the model lacks the desired motion, the assistant should report that gap rather than pretend it can play a non-existent animation.

A different character pack is not the same character

The Retro pack shows a different character set and style. Treat it as a design alternative rather than swapping it into an existing animation rig without testing; model scale, skeleton compatibility and clips can differ between packages.

A beginner-friendly request is: 'Import one provided 3D character, list its available animations, make it idle when stopped and move when I press the arrow keys; tell me what was actually tested.' Verify in Play mode, not from the code alone.

What you still need to finish

These are pre-existing CC0 packs: Protagonists was released in 2020 and Retro in 2022. Their asset pages do not promise a whole playable character controller. Your game still needs input, collision, camera behavior and a real animation-state setup. Original sources: Animated Characters Protagonists and Animated Characters Retro.
