Nexus Mods adds mandatory AI-disclosure fields and clearer mod labels

By GameSlash

New upload fields took effect on 3 November 2026. A 60-day transition covers new detailed disclosure and permission requirements, while basic AI disclosure remains enforced.

Nexus Mods added mandatory AI-disclosure fields to its mod-upload process on 3 November 2026. People using AI to help create game mods must identify that use, while more detailed statements and clearer labels form part of the update. The platform is not introducing a blanket ban on AI-created mods.

What changed on 3 November?

The upload form now asks mod makers whether their work includes AI-generated content, AI-assisted work or AI-generated promotional media. Creators who label a mod AI-assisted will also need to explain publicly where and how AI was involved. Nexus Mods says AI labels will become more visible on mod pages; some accompanying permission and discovery changes are still in development.

For example, if you used an AI coding agent to help write a mod's scripts, or AI tools to make textures or a voice, the relevant disclosure belongs with the mod. An AI-made promotional thumbnail is a separate consideration from the contents of the mod itself.

Will AI mods be removed?

No blanket ban was announced. Nexus Mods says AI-based mods may stay if they meet transparency, permission and presentation rules. It specifically prohibits falsely presenting AI-generated images as genuine in-game screenshots and plans clearer permission controls for derivatives and AI training.

The 60-day transition runs from 3 November 2026 to 2 January 2027 and covers new requirements, including detailed AI-assisted statements and new permission tags. Basic AI disclosure, copyright rules and other existing obligations remain enforced. New uploads must complete the updated fields immediately; creators who fail to fix issues after staff notification may face moderation action.

What this means for AI game creators

This is a concrete example of why an AI workflow needs documentation: record which assets were generated, which scripts were assisted, whose work was reused and which images reflect actual gameplay. Disclosing assistance is not the same as securing permission to redistribute someone else's assets. People browsing mods will also gain more filtering choices as these changes roll out.
