Creators can work alone or in teams and choose their own programming languages, engines and tools. SHIFT can be interpreted in many ways, from changing perspectives and dimensions to building a game around the Shift key.

GitHub says participants must keep game source in a GitHub repository and also submit through the itch.io event page; pushing code alone does not submit the entry. Open source is encouraged but not required.

After submissions close, games can be played and rated on gameplay, graphics, audio, innovation and interpretation of the theme. The announcement says voting closes January 1, 2027.
