AI builds a 3D level, but corridors don't connect? Start from modular dungeon pieces

By GameSlash

A practical 3D-level workflow using Kenney's CC0 dungeon and cave kits: assemble connected rooms first, then test collision, scale and reachable paths.

An AI assistant can scatter 3D walls and props across a scene in seconds. The result may look like a dungeon from above but have doors that do not align, gaps in the floor or corridors that players cannot cross. The fix is to give the agent a small building system before asking for a whole level.

Kenney's Modular Dungeon Kit provides 40 CC0 building files with variations and animation support noted on its official page. The Modular Cave Kit offers another 40 CC0 cave pieces. They are prefabricated models—not finished levels or an AI-generated game.

Build one walkable room before generating ten

Import the models into your 3D engine, keep their original relative scale, and assemble a starting room with one doorway and one short corridor. Ask the coding agent to snap compatible pieces to the same grid and keep the floor continuous. Do not randomize all the pieces at once.

Now enter the scene as a player: can the character pass the door? Are collisions active on the walls and floor? Does the camera get stuck in corners? These checks matter more than whether a screenshot looks impressive.

When to use the cave set

The cave kit gives a distinct natural-rock look for underground routes. You can use it for a different area or biome, but do not casually mix mismatched wall profiles and assume they will fit; test transitions manually. These official preview images show pieces laid out, not a playable map.

A good AI task is specific: 'Using these imported pieces, create one walkable starting room connected to one corridor; add collisions; let me walk from spawn to the exit; list any unresolved gaps.' Only after that passes should you ask for a repeatable random-level generator.

Know what is already provided

The Dungeon Kit lists its initial release in 2025, while the Cave Kit lists a 2026 release. This is an evergreen production method, not a new launch announcement. Both use CC0; credits and downloads are on Modular Dungeon Kit and Modular Cave Kit.
