Xbox forms Xbox Labs to explore AI coding agents and new ways to run games

By GameSlash

Microsoft announced Xbox Labs on October 13, a small experimental team exploring AI-assisted game workflows, new platforms and sharing developer tools.

On October 13, 2026, Xbox announced the creation of Xbox Labs, a small research group tasked with turning emerging game-technology experiments into experiences for players and developers. The announcement came in an internal company memo made public on Xbox Wire.

Why Xbox is exploring game-development agents

In the memo, Asha points to community experiments that rebuild or port games to hardware they were not originally designed for, including browser technologies WebAssembly and WebGPU and translation of Windows builds to Apple Silicon. These are cited as examples of emerging technical possibilities, not as newly announced Xbox ports or Xbox Labs products.

The memo also links the rise of coding agents, which can write, run and test software, to experiments in game creation, access and preservation. Xbox says the new team will comprise game makers, engineers and scientists, who are expected to work openly and share useful tools with outside developers.

What is available now?

The official Xbox Labs website currently introduces the initiative and offers an email sign-up for updates. The launch post does not announce a playable product, a publicly released AI porting tool, or a delivery timetable.

Xbox says its existing priorities remain

The memo also emphasizes continued support for Xbox hardware, game development and responsible stewardship of intellectual property and gaming communities. Questions about which experimental technologies will turn into products remain open; the announcement itself establishes a team, not a game release.
