Dragon Hunter: Cards of the Flame Cave

By An Csk

An adventure game where you explore a grid map, encounter monsters and traps, and choose attack or defense cards within the energy available each turn.

Dragon Hunter: Cards of the Flame Cave is a web adventure game where players explore a grid map and enter card battles when they encounter monsters. The journey starts in a village, with the goal of heading north to find the dragon. This review is based on early exploration and one battle against a skeleton.

Prepare your skills before heading out.

Before starting, there are 6 warrior types to choose from, and you can select 3 skills from 6 options, such as Healing, Light Shield, and Destruction, allowing you to plan your playstyle before entering the scene by considering both health recovery, defense, and damage output based on skill descriptions.

On the map, directional buttons allow movement between areas, with junctions offering choices for onward paths. While traversing, players may encounter monsters or traps that deplete health, so exploration requires monitoring remaining HP alongside route selection. Below the map are boss conditions to track, including minibosses, keys, and the number of monsters to defeat.

Choose cards that match your available power.

Cards in hand show their energy costs, and energy refills at the end of each turn. Players must decide how much to spend on attacks and how much to reserve for defense before handing the turn to the enemy. Some cards combine two effects, such as a shield strike that deals damage while adding shield protection. Reading each card's effects matters more than its name alone.

The combat screen displays what the enemy is about to do, such as a skeleton raising a shield, with a health bar and status indicators for easy reading. After using a card, a message indicates the move just used, helping you keep track of the battle rhythm. Although most visual elements are simple symbols, the information needed for decision-making is located near the card set and the end-turn button.

Victory achieved, continue journey with rewards

After defeating the skeleton, the game awards coins, experience, and drops such as bones, herbs, and status-cleansing potions, while partially restoring health before proceeding. The number of monsters defeated also counts toward boss entry conditions, providing intermediate goals beyond simply finding a path to the destination.

The victory window displays gold, experience, materials, and health recovery.
After a victory, players receive rewards and recover some health before continuing.

The notable feature is the ability to toggle between map exploration and managing power for card usage per turn, which suits those who prefer to carefully analyze move effects and prepare before proceeding. Aspects still under development include the skill selection screen displaying "undefined" before skill names, although skill effect descriptions remain readable. The creators are open to receiving feedback and testing input for this version.
