Gene Café — Brew with Knowledge

By Panuwat Monkung

A web-based beverage shop game linking stock replenishment to DNA, mRNA, and amino acid puzzles, featuring a Codon table to help find answers and pause customers mid-formulation.

Gene Café — Brew with Knowledge is a web-based drink shop management game that uses gene expression exercises to restock the menu. Players alternate between taking orders and solving problems by converting DNA to mRNA and translating the code into amino acid sequences. Upon completing missions, players earn menu cards to brew and serve to customers.

The store page uses a cream-brown color scheme with small characters. A Nucleus door for selecting DNA formulas and a Ribosome machine for the translation step are placed in the same scene as the counter. The bottom menu directly opens the DNA textbook and Codon table. While preparing a formula, customers pause, allowing time to read the prompt and check answers without rushing back to serve.

Read the template strand and synthesize mRNA.

The recipe page displays both Coding DNA and Template DNA along with the direction of the strands. For the transcription step, players must add mRNA bases according to the template strand, then check their answers before placing the mRNA at the Ribosome. Separating the steps in this manner requires players to consider both base pairing and reading direction.

Use the Codon table to translate into amino acids.

Translate the code to read mRNA from 5′ to 3′, then select amino acids according to the Codon using a lookup table. When reaching UAA, select STOP to halt translation; stop codons do not have amino acids to add. Use glass, milk, and various raw materials to arrange answers as symbols representing amino acids in the game.

Correctly translate all 5 units, with UAA as the stop codon.

Upon completing the mission, the game provides a menu card to replenish the beverage brewing inventory. The card is a reward according to the game rules, while the decoding step yields the amino acid sequence that constitutes the polypeptide chain.

Bring cards back to brew and serve drinks

In the shop, menu cards must match orders. Insert a card into the brewing machine, then take the finished drink to the customer at the counter. The first recipe uses one card per cup. Customer waiting time resumes after the mission, giving restocking a clear purpose: preparing the requested drink for sale.

Suitable for reviewing biology step by step.

Gene Café makes orders a reason to complete exercises, with a lookup table and paused time to work through answers. It suits hands-on review of DNA, mRNA, and codons. Players interested only in shop management should know that restocking involves several puzzle steps and considerable time with letters and code tables.

This opinion is based on successfully brewing and serving the first order of the Caramel Pudding Milk recipe.
