Patch launches pixelfx with 244 code-drawn pixel-art effects and a Claude Code skill
By GameSlash
Patch's open-source pixelfx combines customizable game VFX, animation-ready combat moves and sprite-sheet exports, with a Claude Code skill for creating more.
Patch has opened pixelfx, a code-driven pixel-art VFX library for game creators, following its launch on October 30, 2026. The latest project README lists 244 effects, up from the 232 shown in its initial repository description, alongside a Claude Code skill for creating new animations.

Rather than distributing a fixed set of image files, pixelfx describes each effect in JavaScript: flames, explosions, lightning, weather, magic, hit flashes, pickups and UI transitions. Developers can preview the effects in the interactive gallery, recolor them using palettes, mirror or rotate them, and reuse them in a browser game.
Its attack animations go beyond standalone particles. Twelve complete moves and character-linked effects include wind-ups, hit-stop timing, target reactions and recovery, making the impact read as an action rather than an isolated visual overlay.

For Canvas-based projects and frameworks such as Phaser or PixiJS, developers can use the JavaScript effects directly. Godot, Unity and other game engines can instead use exported transparent PNG sprite sheets with Aseprite-style JSON frame data. The README provides `npm i github:patch-gg/pixelfx` to install the library from GitHub.
The included Claude Code plugin helps select existing effects or build new ones through a render–inspect–refine workflow. It can generate contact sheets and flag issues such as visible seams and inconsistent randomness. Pixel artists who are also building their own game assets can explore Agent Sprite Forge as another tool covered by GameSlash.
Patch releases the effects and code under the MIT License, including commercial use. The separate Patch Pixel font in the gallery is expressly excluded from that license, and the project credits adaptations of other MIT-licensed work.
