VocabWolf: Give clues and find the wolf among friends

By Nont Nonta

A browser party game for 3 to 8 players: compare clues, vote for the player with a different word and protect the Seer in larger groups.

VocabWolf is a browser party game for 3 to 8 players built around secret words and spotting suspicious clues. Everyone describes their own word, then tries to work out who received a different one. Creator Nont Nonta says the game began as an easy way to play with friends and describes it as free, with Thai, English and German available.

Similar words, suspicious clues

Under the rules, villagers receive the same word while wolves receive a related one: the group might have cat while a wolf has dog. Players take turns giving clues without saying their word outright. The complication is that wolves do not know their own role either. They have to listen to the other descriptions to work out whether they are talking about the same thing as everyone else.

Groups of 3 to 5 have one wolf; groups of 6 to 8 have two. After the discussion, everyone votes for a suspect. Voting out a wolf gives the villagers the win, unless the wolf reverses the result by finding the Seer under the larger-group rules. If the vote misses a wolf, the wolves win. A tied vote leads to a runoff, and each winner earns one point.

Gather your group in a room

The lobby displays a room code, with buttons to copy the code or a link to send to friends. Discussion time options are 1, 2, 3 and 5 minutes, plus a custom option, so a group can choose a pace that suits its conversation. The rulebook also says players can tap an avatar to mark someone they suspect and tap again to remove the mark.

Larger groups add a Seer to hunt

With at least 6 players, one villager becomes the Seer and knows the identity of one wolf. This role needs to be careful with its clues: when a wolf is voted out, that wolf gets to pick one player. Finding the Seer gives the wolves the win. This rule makes concealing your own role part of the decision about how to point out a suspect.

For groups that enjoy reading each other’s clues

VocabWolf’s appeal is in listening to clues that almost fit together, then deciding whether the difference is enough to justify a vote. Its format should interest groups that enjoy conversation games and playfully suspecting their friends. Arrange a group of at least three before starting.

This introduction is based on creating a room and reading the rules. A full round with other players has not been tested, so multiplayer balance and performance have not been assessed.
