Future? No Thanks! replaces two AI voices after backlash and offers refunds

An indie game swapped two synthetic voice roles for human recordings after criticism. The developer's account shows why AI disclosure matters even for small changes.

When players object to AI-generated voices in an indie game, is replacing a couple of lines enough? Future? No Thanks! creator Paolo Pedercini said he replaced two text-to-speech voice roles with human recordings after criticism of the game's AI disclosure. He also offered to reimburse buyers who still felt misled.

This is a real update described in the developer's October 23 post, subsequently updated — not a claim that every line of game dialogue had been generated by AI. The two parts were an automated toilet and an automatic translator at a hair salon.

What changed, and what did not?

The developer said the replacement recordings had already been made earlier in 2026. In the same game update, various gigs also began paying slightly more, intended to reduce situations where players could struggle to finish every quest.

The game's earlier October 17 disclosure, updated October 23 said ChatGPT or Claude had been used for a small amount of late-stage coding assistance, such as debugging a shader or a loading glitch. Pedercini distinguished that support from artwork and writing; he also explained that early demo music made with Suno had already been replaced.

Why should someone building a game with AI care?

The practical lesson is that a developer may see an AI-assisted detail as minor while an audience sees it as a matter of trust. If you use AI for voices, images or code, decide what you can explain publicly and preserve the ability to replace disputed assets. Neither the existence of AI tools nor the use of one tool alone predicts how players will react.

Future? No Thanks! is a narrative adventure in an imagined ecosocialist city, released for Windows and macOS on September 4, 2026. This article draws on the author's statements and official screenshots; GameSlash has not played the new build or compared the audio itself.
