EA closes BioWare and stops early development of the next Mass Effect

By GameSlash

EA and BioWare confirmed the studio closure on 21 October 2026. EA will stop its early-stage Mass Effect project and refocus development on fewer large games.

Electronic Arts announced on 21 October 2026 that its BioWare studio will close, the Edmonton workspace will shut, and the next Mass Effect project will not proceed beyond early development. These decisions are explicitly stated in EA's company-wide staff memo and confirmed by BioWare's farewell announcement.

What is canceled—and what is not

The work being stopped is a small-team project for a future Mass Effect game. EA did not announce the cancellation of previously released Mass Effect titles. BioWare says its more than 30 years of games included Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem. The developer's closure statement thanks staff and the players who followed those stories.

Where EA says it will invest instead

In the same official restructuring plan, EA commits to continue work on the next Star Wars Jedi and Marvel's Iron Man, while bringing Respawn and DICE together on an unnamed future shooter project. EA also references Battlefield, Apex and sports games. It is concentrating on fewer large, simultaneous action-adventure productions. For The Sims, the memo says it is pausing Project Lotus and prioritizing Project Evergreen; this is a pause, not a confirmation that Lotus is permanently canceled.

Layoff figures require a separate attribution

The public EA and BioWare statements establish the closure and project decision but do not assign an exact company-wide layoff figure. Gematsu's coverage citing Bloomberg reporting says approximately 400 EA employees would be affected, including around 50 at BioWare. Those headcounts are reported estimates, not a verified direct statement in the EA memo. The current game press images in this article are archival artworks from EA's older Mass Effect release materials and Dragon Age materials; neither represents a fresh screenshot or playable canceled build.
