Ludo adds normal maps for dynamically lit 2D game sprites and tiles
By GameSlash
Ludo's November 6 update adds normal maps to animated sprites, directional sheets and images, with Godot/Unity export and MCP/CLI support.
On November 6, 2026, Ludo.ai added normal-map generation to its game-asset workflow. Developers can now pair 2D sprites and image textures with pixel-aligned lighting maps, letting an in-game torch or muzzle flash light an otherwise flat character or floor without remodeling it in 3D. The change is documented in Ludo's dated official changelog.

What changed for sprites and tiles
The Sprite Generator now has a Normal Map toggle for Animate, Keyframe Animation, Transfer Motion, Edit Spritesheet and New Direction. Existing animations can also generate a map from Change Sprite Settings; if that operation requires reslicing the sheet, frame size and frame count can be adjusted at the same time.

Directional Sprites can export a corresponding map for each rendered direction. In the Image Generator, Generate Normal Map works for a still image, including tileable textures, props and backgrounds. Ludo says these still-image normal maps are free, while animated sheets add 0.5 credits per sheet. This pricing is from the November 6 announcement and could change.
Using the result in a game engine
Normal maps line up with the image pixel for pixel and animated frames with their sprite frames. Ludo exports a map separately or packages it beside a sprite sheet and JSON. The maps follow the OpenGL normal convention, which Ludo says Unity and Godot read directly; Unreal users need to invert the green channel. Builders still need to set up the normal-map texture and lights in their own engine.

Agent workflow and practical limits
Ludo's API and MCP integrations now accept save_normals: true and return a normal_map_url. The CLI adds --save-normals, plus ludo image normal-map for existing images. This is asset creation and export, not a replacement for engine-side lighting or a claim that a complete playable game has been generated. The examples shown are the developer's promotional demonstrations, not GameSlash gameplay tests.
