OpenAI Images 2.6 adds GIF generation, with three game sprite sheet demos

OpenAI introduced Images 2.6 on November 4, 2026, bringing GIF creation to ChatGPT, Codex and the API. For 2D game makers, the release includes a prompt worth studying. OpenArt asks for six sequential poses in a 3-by-2 sprite sheet and keeps the camera, costume and scene fixed from frame to frame.

Two outputs for different stages of game development

A sprite sheet puts every pose on one image. Slice the cells and assign timing, the pivot and hit events in your engine. An animated GIF lets you check the motion and share it quickly. OpenAI’s Image API guide documents native GIF output with 2 to 64 frames and a requested delay of 20 to 2,000 milliseconds per frame. That setting applies to the whole request. Splitting a sheet gives you independent timing for each pose.

OpenAI offers Flare for faster iteration and Sunburst for detailed work and better consistency across edits at medium or high quality. The company reports that Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than before. That figure describes image generation in the announcement.

Three GameSlash sprite demos

GameSlash generated the sheets with the built-in image generator and assembled the animation previews from the individual cells. The generator did not report an exact model version.

Swordsman combo in 18 frames

The new sheet uses 18 distinct poses in three six-frame clips: a rising slash, a horizontal sweep and an overhead finisher. Each strike has a windup, an active window and recovery. All frames share a foot pivot, with different hold times for individual poses. The sample combo spans 66 ticks, or 1.10 seconds at 60 Hz. Hitboxes activate briefly during each swing and the first two attacks accept a buffered follow-up input near the end.

Frost Nova spell

Six frames take a small spark through an expanding ice ring to scattered fragments. Our first version spilled across adjacent cells. Asking for smaller sprites and extra padding kept the second version inside the grid.

Seedling idle

A potted seedling gently sways across six frames. The pot acts as a fixed anchor while the stem and leaves move. This is the sort of short loop that can bring a farm-sim prop to life.
