Quixel Says Megascans Are Going Free on Fab, Opens AI Model Training Rights

By GameSlash

Quixel's November 5 announcement says Megascans are going free and updates AI training rights, but developers should check live Fab prices and license flags.

Quixel announced on November 5, 2026 that its entire Megascans collection is becoming free on Fab, alongside updated terms expressly allowing AI model training with Megascans and Megaplants. The change potentially matters to game creators using scanned environments as well as those building tools that learn from real-world assets. This is a new licensing and pricing announcement, not a newly released game or a demonstration of AI-generated gameplay. See Quixel's original announcement.

What is free and what changed for AI workflows

Quixel says it is making the full Megascans library free on its Fab seller page and its updated terms cover AI model training on Megascans and Megaplants. The potential workflow is to obtain eligible scanned material under the applicable license and use those assets as permitted reference or training inputs when creating photorealistic game environments. The announcement does not say that all other Fab creators' art is newly free or open for AI training, and it is not a universal license to copy promotional images.

Refunds and studio licensing exceptions

Customers who bought Megascans or a Quixel Bundle on or after January 1, 2025 are due refunds into their Epic Account Balance while retaining their purchased license. The Quixel FAQ says customers should sign in and accept the latest terms, and refunds should appear by the end of 2026. Existing Quixel studio-license holders remain governed by their studio contracts and should check with their representative.

Read the current license before using assets in a training pipeline

At the time of checking, the Fab seller gallery still showed prices on some products, and individual sample listings still display an 'Allows usage with AI: No' badge even though Quixel's November 5 announcement says the Quixel terms now permit training. That discrepancy means developers should check the current accepted agreement and listing details before using assets in a model-training dataset, especially in commercial or studio settings. Separate licenses may govern items from other sellers. For traditional game scene creation, check each download's supported engine and format.
